Uttarakhand (Hindi: Uttara + Khand i.e. North + Section or Segment), is a state located in the northern part of India. It was carved out of Himalayan and adjoining districts of Uttar Pradesh on 9 November 2000, becoming the 27th state of the Republic of India.
Uttarakhand has borders with both Tibet (China) and Nepal to the north, and the east, and the internal boundaries borders with the Indian states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh in the west and south respectively. The region is traditionally referred to as Uttarakhand in Hindu scriptures and old literature, a term which derives from the Sanskrit for Northern Country or Section. With an area of 20,682 sq mi (53,566 km²).
